I’ve spent 25 years in IT, and somewhere along the way I discovered something unexpected – my real skill isn’t just solving problems, it’s documenting everything so I never have to figure it out twice. If I can show someone else how to do something so I don’t have to, I will.
I don’t hoard information. I’d rather share what I know, automate what I can, then move on to learn the next interesting thing. Rinse, lather, repeat.
This approach accidentally created my dream job. I automated myself out of routine work and into creative problem-solving. Now I spend my days building PowerShell tools, crafting Excel dashboards, styling CSS, and helping other IT folk tackle their challenges.
My philosophy is simple:
I can build you a ladder to the moon, but it’ll cost a trillion dollars a year, for a hundred years. Instead, let’s find something sooner and cheaper that meets most of your needs.”
This site is an extension of that mindset – capturing the solutions, quick fixes, and tips that work for me, served up for anyone who might find them useful. Because the best knowledge is shared knowledge.
WORK HISTORY
Automation Specialist
Government.
I took a role supporting a suite of applications, but my PowerShell and Excel automation was embraced to the point that I became the go-to guy. Allowed to revamp websites and documentation, I’ve forged a role as an IT Renaissance Man, embracing building logos, CSS styles, documentation and automation solutions.
Senior Systems Infrastructure Engineer
Government
Supported another group and took a permanent role with them. Here I brought order to chaos and unleashed the power and joy of creating good documentation. It’s also where I started taking PowerShell more seriously, became obsessed with Excel dashboards, and embraced the need for a team to make time to solve and automate our own problems – making helping the wider group easier.
Systems Infrastructure Engineer
Government
Finding a place where I believed in the work we did as a team, I just knuckled down to prove I belonged, returning to my AD & Exchange background. My illustration, sense of style and page layout was embraced and encouraged.
Sys Admin Contractor
International Machinery
I described this as a disaster factory – every day something key would fail and the revelation that documentation didn’t exist. This nightmare taught me I was tired of working to make an old man rich, and my paycheck wasn’t worth my health.
IT Administration Officer
Accounting Firm
This was a fun role where I brought my enterprise skill set to a small nationwide business. They introduced me to the true power of Excel – the customization and macro potential that a single workbook can hold.
Customer Relationship Coordinator
University
Branched out to focus on research tools and open source solutions. Most importantly, put users into the framework of customers – they know what they want, our role is to help them get there. My philosophy: “I can build you a ladder to the moon, it just costs a trillion dollars a year for the next hundred years… or we can find something sooner and cheaper that meets most of your needs.
This is also where I was introduced to OneNote, and the power this has to serve as your own person Knowledge base. I preach it like a religion everywhere I go.”
Senior Systems Administrator
University
Here’s where I really got exposure to scale. Mass virtualization became the norm, and VB scripting was the cornerstone of productivity. Exchange and AD knowledge became my superpower, and although introduced to PowerShell, I was still writing VB scripts to write my PowerShell. Developed an appreciation for ITIL structure and DR planning at enterprise level.
Software Tester / Network Administrator
Global Software comapny
Discovered the power of virtualisation while maintaining both production and development networks. Got my first real taste of automation, while using Ruby to run software testing for our email archiving program, across multiple mail and operating system .
Audit/Rollout Contractor
Government
Led a major desktop rollout with mass interpersonal exposure – meeting and coordinating with hundreds of users face to face. Learned to lead a team and brought AD scripting skills to bear on tracking down rogue computers.
System Administrator
Charity
Learned the “do it yourself” mantra through problem solving, networking, and VBA scripting. Bespoke Access databases became my bread and butter. Got my first taste of HTML and CSS, while mastering MS Office, Exchange, and AD fundamentals.
EDUCATION
Bachelor of Information Technology
Institute of Technology
Three years that changed my life. I was a laborer who ended up making more money on Jury Duty than working. After the 4 week trial I quit my job and embraced the strength of my mind, not my back.

QuoteThe Change Train
“You can’t stop the Change Train. Stand in front of it and you get run over, stay on the station and you get left behind, but get on board and you can help shape where it stops and be part of the team that guides it to its final destination.”

Dungeons and DragonsThe inner Nerd
I’ve played Dungeons and Dragons for over 40 years as both Dungeon Master and Player. This game taught me advanced mathematics in primary school, quick thinking and improvisation under pressure. Most importantly, it developed my creative problem-solving skills and ability to facilitate groups through conflicting perspectives toward shared goals.

Current ObsessionAI and Web Development
I’m currently obsessed with websites, CSS and PHP. I’m using AI (Claude in particular) to accelerate my output, then meticulously document the code to ensure I’m not just learning how to ask AI questions, but actually utilizing AI as a learning tool to deepen my understanding.
